At Shoreline Building Performance, we’ve always been about helping homeowners unlock better energy efficiency and comfort. That’s why we’re proud to offer solar panel installation as part of our full-service approach to building science. Since we launched, our customers have been asking some smart, thoughtful questions. We’re here to answer them.
Whether you’re early in your research or getting ready to invest in an energy retrofit or other home upgrade, this Q&A covers the key things BC homeowners want to know about going solar with Shoreline.
What kinds of roofs can Shoreline install solar panels on?
Great question, and usually one of the first we get.
While we don’t currently install solar panel systems on flat roofs (due to attic access challenges), we can work with almost any other roof pitch. Our experienced team can assess your home’s structure and let you know what’s possible. For steep-pitched roofs, we may require scaffolding for safe access during installation, but we’ll handle all those details for you.
Will installing solar increase my home insurance?
Short answer: No, not significantly, and it’s worth it. Solar panels typically do not drive major insurance cost increases. Roof-mounted systems are usually covered under your standard dwelling insurance. Ground-mounted units might require coverage under “other structures,” which may have slightly different limits—but it’s easy to add protection with minimal cost.
Why This Is a Win-Win for You
- Boosts property value — Studies show solar can raise home value by roughly 4%.
- Minimal premium changes — When insurers adjust, it’s generally just a few dollars per month, tiny compared to savings on energy bills.
- Full protection, zero worry — Coverage for theft, fire, wind, hail, snow damage—solar is often already included. Just confirm specifics with your insurer.
What happens when it rains or gets windy?
Canadian weather is no joke and British Columbia’s climate is no stranger to wind and rain. Many customers ask how that affects solar power generation and performance.
The good news? Solar panels are built to withstand heavy rain, wind, and even hail. In fact, solar panels often perform better in cooler temperatures. While rainy days produce less energy than sunny ones, your system will still generate power, even under clouds. Plus, net metering with BC Hydro means any excess energy you produce on sunny days gets credited, helping balance out usage on darker ones.
How does tree growth affect solar production over time?
If your property has large or fast-growing trees, shading can reduce your solar system’s output. During your initial site assessment, we’ll look at current shading and long-term growth potential.
Shoreline uses digital imaging tools to forecast how shading could impact your system and recommend solutions, such as tree trimming or adjusting the panel array placement. We design every solar array with long-term performance in mind, so you can feel confident your investment is protected.
What about the environmental impact of shipping and materials?
Solar is one of the most impactful ways to reduce your carbon footprint, but we don’t stop there.
At Shoreline, we work with local shipping and recycling partners to reduce the environmental impact of transporting materials. We also source from reputable manufacturers that prioritize sustainable production practices. That way, your solar system helps offset carbon emissions not just once it’s installed—but throughout its lifecycle.
Can solar increase my home’s resale value?
Yes, and it can do more than that.
Installing solar panels typically increases your home’s market value, especially when paired with 0% interest financing through programs like the Canada Greener Homes Loan. If you’re planning to sell your home in 6–12 months, a solar installation can serve as a compelling value add without requiring a major upfront investment.
Keep in mind: this benefit applies to primary residences and does require that the interest-free loan be paid off upon sale. Still, for many BC homeowners, the added property value and energy cost savings make solar energy systems a smart short-term and long-term investment.
